Elder Barsanuphius of Optina by Victor Afanasiev, Volume VII of the Elders of Optina Series. Elder Barsanuphius (1845–1913), a disciple of Elder Anatole (Zertsalov) and Elder Nektary, was a highly cultured man and a successful colonel before entering the monastic life at a relatively late age. Due to his purity of heart and spiritual sobriety, he was transformed by God into a grace-filled Elder virtually overnight. With a sympathetic soul Elder Barsanuphius attended to the world, and the Lord parted a curtain before him, showing him the horrors of the future.  People from the world, thirsting for consolation in their sorrows, streamed to Optina. Elder Barsanuphius, in frail health but strengthened by the power of the Lord, received them, conversed with them, confessed them, and directed them to the only true path. He was a man of extraordinary spiritual vision, and could see clearly into the hearts of those who came to him.  Presented here is a complete biography of this great Elder, including his talks on a variety of subjects, excerpts from the journal of his cell-attendant, the future Elder Nikon, and selections from his spiritual poetry.  Paperback, 840 pp., illustrated.  HER1317 $25.50

The Mystery of the Wonderworker of Ostrog by Protopresbyter Radomir Nikchevich and Vesna Nikchevich, translated by Ana Smylyanich.  This book tells the story of the transformation of a modern-day Serbian youth, Mladjen, from the depths of despair to a life of faith and spiritual enlightenment. Mladjen is mystically called by St. Basil the Wonderworker of Ostrog (+1671) to the Ostrog monastery in Montenegro, where he is confronted by the presence of God, by monks who see into his soul, and by the weight of his sins. During the course of his visit to the Ostrog monastery, Mladjen himself becomes one of the new miracles of Ostrog.  A summary of the Christian path to salvation, a chronicle of the Serbian Orthodox Church and the people of Montenegro, and a complete Life of St. Basil of Ostrog form integral chapters in the story of Mladjen’s rebirth.  The entire text is overlaid with the evangelical teachings of the Church, the experience of the Holy Fathers, and contemporary stories of many witnesses to the miracles of Ostrog.  With full-page color photographs interspersed throughout the book, the story of Mladjen and of St. Basil’s heavenly intercession is presented through pictures as well as words. The book is adorned by images of ancient Serbian icons, as well as by photographs of contemporary life in Serbian churches and monasteries. This beautiful, large-format book is a richly layered treasury of Orthodox spirituality, which, taken as a whole, has the power to change lives.  Hardcover with dust jacket, 296 pages, 9 x 12 ½ inch format, coated paper, illustrated.  HER1328 $64.00

Saint Gregory Palamas as a Hagiorite by Metropolitan of Nafpaktos Hierotheos, translated by Esther Williams.  The life and the teaching of St. Gregory Palamas, Archbishop of Thessaloniki,  to whom is devoted the second Sunday of Lent, and is considered the greatest of the ascetical Fathers, are very important to Orthodox Christians.  Herein is set out the limits and the great differences which exist between the abstract and impersonal life of Eastern religions and the Orthodox Tradition as well as between Barlaam's scholasticism - moralism and Orthodox spiritual life. Tendencies, such as the impersonal way of life and scholasticism together with moralism, prevail in the West today which create a deep despair and speculation.  This book also shows the particular features of Byzantium, which used to be called Romania (Roman Empire) as it is preserved and kept, even in our days, on the Holy Mountain.  Many people admire the art which developed in the Byzantium (Roman Empire) but in the final analysis this art was the outcome of a holy life, it was the fruit of a way of life, as we can see in the life and the teaching of St. Gregory Palamas. pb. 400 pp.  SNH007 $28.00

Great-Martyr Tsar Lazar of Serbia His Life and Service the Life by Fr. Daniel M. Rogich Great-Martyr Tsar Lazar ruled the Kingdom of Serbia, which was united by him, at a most pivotal moment in history. At a time when the Moslem horde was threatening to overrun all of Europe, this truly valiant leader, having been inspired by an angelic vision, sacrificed himself and his army at the fateful battle of Kosovo on June 15, 1389. Choosing the heavenly kingdom over the earthly one, he and his army went to victorious martyrdom. When receiving the Eucharist at the Divine Liturgy prior to battle, they all chanted in unison, “For the honorable Cross and golden freedom!”, followed by the famous words of St. Sava of Serbia, “Give up everything for Christ, but Christ for nothing!” As a result of the battle that Tsar Lazar waged on Kosovo Field, the Moslems never regained strength to take Western Europe. Thus, the Orthodox Kingdom of Serbia must always be acknowledged by Western Europe as that “sacrificial” kingdom which stood in the path of total Moslem captivity.  Large-format book, printed in two colors, contains the Life of this Great-Martyr and a complete Vigil Service to the Saint, translated from Church Slavonic. 56 pages, illustrated, full-color cover. pb HER1309 $13.00

St. Stephen the New tr. by Br. Isaac Lambertsen.  A wholly new edition of a long out of print favorite, with the addition of the liturgical service in his honor and a full color cover icon. Born of an apparently barren mother after her insistent prayers, St. Stephen was consecrated even from his earliest days to the Lord's service. Taking the monastic habit as a teenager, he distinguished himself in piety from his earliest days, unknowingly preparing himself for suffering and ultimate death at the hands of the haters of the icons at the age of 53, on the 28th of November 767. Far from a "mere" story of suffering and death at the hands of the godless, the account of St. Stephen's life provides a profound insight into the conflict between the defenders of the holy icons and their persecutors.  KRO7112 $8.00
